Cultivation success depends on consistency. Even small deviations in environmental conditions can influence growth rates, productivity, cell health and process reproducibility. For this reason, the ISF1-Z has been engineered around a simple philosophy: eliminating unnecessary variability and creating stable cultivation conditions throughout the entire lifespan of the system.
Kuhner incubator shakers are built for long-term operation, not short product cycles. Our goal is to keep every machine serviceable for at least 20 years, backed by a five-year warranty, ongoing spare parts availability and direct application support. Considering the full life span, this makes the ISF1-Z one of the most economical solutions on the market. Every unit undergoes an elaborate final test before shipment, and the test protocol is available upon request as documented proof of its performance from day one.
The maintenance-free direct-drive system is central to this reliability. It runs without service-intensive wear parts, delivering stable shaking performance while keeping maintenance requirements low. Combined with high-quality stainless steel construction and precisely engineered environmental control, it forms the technical foundation for the exceptional temperature uniformity described below.

✔️ Protect valuable cultures through stable cultivation conditions.
✔️ Reduce operational risk and process variability.
✔️ High long-term equipment performance.
✔️ Minimize maintenance requirements and downtime.
✔️ Lower total cost of ownership.
Temperature distribution is one of the most important factors influencing cultivation outcomes. When conditions vary inside the chamber, cultures can experience different environments even though they are part of the same process. This may create variability in cell growth, productivity and experimental results.
The ISF1-Z was engineered to provide highly uniform temperature conditions throughout the cultivation chamber, with a temperature deviation of less than ±0.2°C at 37°C. This figure already accounts for both the deviation across the shaking tray and the sensor's own measurement uncertainty, values some manufacturers report separately. The result is tested and verified on every single machine before delivery. Every cultivation vessel benefits from this stable environment, supporting reproducibility and process reliability wherever it is positioned in the chamber.
For researchers, this means greater confidence in experimental data. For process development teams, it supports smoother scale-up and technology transfer. For production environments, it helps reduce process variability and supports robust operation.

✔️ Improved experimental reproducibility.
✔️ Reduced batch-to-batch variation.
✔️ Easier process transfer between sites.
✔️Greater
confidence in scale-up activities.
✔️ More reliable cultivation results.
Because cultivation success is often determined not by average conditions, but by the consistency of conditions throughout the entire process. Uniform temperature distribution helps create a foundation for a reliable and reproducible cultivation performance.
Scientific requirements rarely remain unchanged. New organisms, different vessel sizes and changing process objectives often require different shaking conditions. Replacing equipment every time a process evolves is expensive and inefficient.
The ISF1-Z addresses this challenge through Kuhner’s user-adjustable shaking diameter concept. Multiple standard shaking diameters are included, allowing users to adapt the shaking diameter by themselves fast and easily to the required cultivation conditions, instead of working with compromises.
This flexibility enables optimization of oxygen transfer and process performance across a broad range of applications. It also helps protect investments by ensuring that the incubator shaker remains relevant as requirements evolve.

✔️ Adapt to new applications quickly
✔️ Support different cultivation strategies.
✔️ Future-proof your investment.
✔️Reduce
the need for additional equipment.
✔️ Maintain flexibility across changing projects.
In regulated environments, contamination control and process validation are not optional, they determine whether a process can move forward. The ISF1-Z was engineered to meet these requirements without compromising ease of use.
Every ISF1-Z is fully made of stainless steel, inside and out. Its hygienic design, in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14159, includes rounded corners, an integrated rear drain and a drive system protected from spills - reducing cleaning time and minimizing the risk of cross-contamination. Between cultivation runs, the chamber can also be chemically disinfected or sterilized using an optional UV lamp, supporting consistent hygiene across every process.
For regulated environments, IQ/OQ documentation is available and can be performed directly on-site to simplify qualification and keep validation on schedule.
✔️ Support compliance in regulated environments.
✔️ Simplify validation with on-site IQ/OQ.
✔️ Reduce cleaning time and effort.
✔️Minimize the risk of cross-contamination.
✔️ Enable reliable, repeatable sterilization.

New: Automatic door option for ISF1-Z

CO2 control is essential when working with mammalian cell cultures. Kuhner was the first company to manufacture and supply incubator shakers with CO2 control more than 15 years ago and continues to offer this option. More.
The innovative ISF1-Z Peltier uses long life peltier elements for precise heating and cooling and also for humidity control. This eco-friendly concept makes coolants or compressors unnecessary. The humidity control of the ISF1-Z Peltier is able to humidify and dehumidify up to 50% compared with the ambient relative humidity.
Humidity control is an important factor in successful fermentation. Evaporation from microtiter plates, or when cultivating in flasks for long periods (e.g. cell cultures), can be significantly reduced with humidification.
To reduce evaporation from shake flasks or microtiter plates a water bath is placed inside the incubator. This water bath is fitted with an automatic water supply.
Our newly developed EcoDew®-Technology provides precise humidity control. More.
This versatile new option for the ISF1-Z Peltier incubator shaker can shake at 3mm orbit diameter with speeds up to 1000rpm. This combination is recommended for users of 96 deep-well microtiter plates with high filling volumes. The table is specially designed for up to 20 microtiter plates, and it is also suitable for the Duetz system. The shaking diameter is user-adjustable to any other standard configurations of 3, 6, 9, 12.5, 19, 25, 50, and 70mm. It runs smoothly and quietly and can be stacked up to three machines high. There are special technical add-ons that ensure uniform temperature distribution in the incubator chamber. It comes with our standard 5-year standard warranty guaranteeing quality and durability.

As in a biological safety cabinet, the chamber of a Kuhner incubator shaker can also be sterilized with an integrated UV lamp. The lamp is situated to maximise irradiation of the chamber and shaking table. The UV lamp has a clearly marked external switch and when the door is opened, the UV-lighting is automatically switched off.

The Kuhner SUN is the optimal solution for cultivating light-dependent cultures. Two independently controllable channels allow specific wavelength ranges to be precisely adjusted in addition to standard cultivation conditions, enabling targeted influence on light-dependent metabolic pathways. With a light intensity of up to 320 μmol s-¹ m-² on the surface and a combination of warm white and cool white light, the module enables flexible adaptation to a wide range of applications – from algal and plant cell cultures to phototrophic bacterial cultures.
Available for light sensitive medium or organisms. Any Kuhner incubator shaker can be delivered with blackened windows to prevent unwanted daylight or UV radiation inside the incubator.
Check out the Kuhner EquipNote "Light protection for Kuhner incubators".

The ISF1-Z incubator shaker with automatic door is designed for easy handling and maximum comfort. The automatic door is activated by pressing a button on the incubator shaker. A foot switch option is also available.

Labelling plates are now available for the ISF1-Z foot switch that is used with the automatic door option. For a stack of 2x or 3x ISF1-Z incubator shakers with the automatic door feature, these labelling plates will allow the user to easily identify which foot pedal corresponds to each machine.

This option includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen with our Kuhner Insight Software. The touchscreen has been designed for simple operation, monitoring and programming. It can also be retrofitted to existing incubator shakers. More.

The pull-out table is designed for the ISF4-X and ISF1-Z incubator shakers as well as the Rack System. This remarkable device makes loading and unloading trays much easier.

The dual table is an easy and economical way of doubling the shaking capacity. The dual shaking table consists of two levels. Each level will accept an E (420 x 420 mm), EX (500 x 420 mm) or F (800 x 420 mm) size tray.
The lower level of the dual table is the standard Z-table or a pull-out table. Combining the pull-out feature (only for the lower platform) with the dual-level function allows faster access to the bottom level for easy handling and better ergonomics.
The distance between the two levels of the dual table is user-adjustable; the maximal distance between the two levels is 200 mm. At this distance the lower level accepts 125 mL, 250 mL, and 500 mL Erlenmeyer shake flasks. If required, the user can also easily remove the upper level completely to use the incubator shaker for flasks or vessels taller than 500 mL Erlenmeyer flasks.
However, with the dual table the shaking speed is limited to 200 rpm at a shaking diameter of 50 mm, 250 rpm at 25 mm, and 300 rpm at 12.5 mm (all other maximum shaking frequencies, dependent on the shaking diameter, can be withdrawn from the ISF1-Z manual).

Do you perform screenings with a large number of 50 ml bioreactors (TPP, Falcon etc.) or microtiter plates? Would you like to shake different cultivation vessels on the same shaker and be able to change the composition quickly and easily? Then the Kuhner EPFL-table is the optimal solution for you. The shaker table has 5 individual clamps, so that 5 different holders or EPFL universal trays can be clamped. By opening a clamp, a single holder or universal tray can be easily removed from the incubator shaker and processed under a clean bench while the remaining holders/trays keep on shaking.
The EPFL universal tray can be equipped with clamps for Erlenmeyer flasks, Schott laboratory bottles, test tube holders, microtiter plates or customer-specific holders. Rearrangement of these clamps and holders is quick and easy. The universal tray can also be equipped with sticky strips. Sticky strips are used to fix shake flasks or other equipment on shaking trays. They offer easy handling and flexible positioning of different sizes and shapes of shake flasks and other vessels.
Special holders for microtiter plates, 50 mL centrifuge tubes (Falcons) and 600 mL reaction vessels are also available for the EPFL-table.
Instead of 5 individual holders, a large Kuhner F-tray (800 x 420mm) can also be clamped onto the shaker table.
For the smaller (incubator) shakers from Kuhner, correspondingly adapted EPFL-tables with 3 or 4 clamps are available (LT-X: 3 clamps, LS-Z: 3 or 4 clamps).

Kuhner TOM (Transfer-Rate Online
Measurement) measures online oxygen transfer rate (OTR), carbon dioxide
transfer rate (CTR) and the respiratory quotient (RQ) in up to 16 individual
shake flasks for better process understanding and informed process development.
TOM is easily installed in any Kuhner shaker and can be operated with various
flask types and sizes including single use shake flasks. Kuhner TOM has zero
footprint on the shaker tray as it is mounted above (see picture below). More.

AerationSystem and FlowCon provide the ideal system for carrying out cell/stem cell cultivations in a simple, fast, and inexpensive manner.
Lab shakers in
temperature-controlled rooms and incubator shakers without humidity and CO2-control
can be equipped with the AerationSystem and FlowCon to easily implement humidification and a controlled
gas composition for carrying out cell cultivations (e.g., CHO, HEK cells…) in
shake flasks.

The FlowCon is a stand-alone gas mixing device and provides a precise gas composition and flow rate. Simultaneously, the AerationSystem (consisting of GasDivider and special shake flask caps) humidifies and distributes the gas flow evenly to the connected shake flasks. Evaporation losses from the shake flasks are significantly reduced, which is particularly advantageous for very long cultivation times (such as cell culture processes) and contributes to successful cultivations. Another advantage is that opening the incubator door does not affect the gas composition in the shake flasks when they are connected to the aeration system.
By controlling the composition of the inlet air with the FlowCon, it is not only possible to supplement CO2 but also to increase or reduce the concentration of oxygen (O2) or implement anoxic conditions using nitrogen (N2). This control of gas compositions allows for a variety of different applications, including stem cell processes for gene therapy or cultivated meat that require a physiological oxygen concentration at 5% O2 or anaerobic cultivations in a nitrogen atmosphere.
The patented Kuhner GasDivider humidifies the mixed, dry gas flow provided by the FlowCon and distributes it precisely and evenly across the attached shake flasks, independent of shake flask type, tube length and any filters in-between. As the GasDivider is placed on the shaking tray of the (incubator) shaker, the gas flow is also perfectly adapted to the temperature of the incubator shaker or temperature-controlled room.

To prevent accidental operation of the controllers, the panel can be protected by a perspex cover.

Kuhner CleanShield is a disposable inlay for the newly designed water bath-Z. The CleanShield simplifies the cleaning process, saves users’ time, and provides a clean environment in our shaker incubators. The open water bath has been designed to allow a quick replacement of the CleanShield and a good visual inspection. Both aspects contribute to a safe and reliable performance of the conducted cultivations. The process of changing the sterile Kuhner CleanShield inlays takes just five minutes and cultivation can resume immediately after. Harsh cleaning agents might leave residues or vapors in the incubator that could negatively impact your cultures. The CleanShield eliminates this risk and protects the water bath which results in less maintenance and an increased lifetime of the shaker incubator.
The ISF1-Z comes with two water bath options:
The standard water bath-Z can be converted to a water bath-Z for Kuhner CleanShield, by using the retrofit set 104488.

You have a low ceiling or low hanging ceiling lamps in your laboratory but want to fit an ISF1-Z triple stack in the room?
With a door opening limiter for the upper shaker (order n° 108602), the maximum height of an ISF1-Z triple stack can be reduced by about 8 cm (from 2536 mm to 2457 mm). The installation of two small spacers into the door hinges reduces the height of the opened door noticeable but without constraining the access to the incubator chamber.
A further reduction of the maximum height is also possible on customer request. Please feel free to contact us via office@kuhner.com.

Everything you need to know about the ISF1-Z incubator shaker: space, load, maintenance, temperature, monitoring and upgrades.

An incubator shaker — also called a shaking incubator — combines orbital shaking with controlled temperature, and optionally humidity and CO₂, in a single unit. It is used to cultivate microbial, mammalian, plant and insect cell cultures in shake flasks, microtiter plates, tubes and shaken bioreactors, where continuous agitation ensures oxygen transfer and homogeneous conditions.
Yes. All four ISF1-Z models are available with CO₂ control, which is essential for mammalian cell cultures. Kuhner was the first manufacturer to offer shaking incubators with CO₂ control and has refined the technology for over 25 years. For humidity-controlled conditions, choose the ISF1-Z EcoDew® or a Peltier or Compressor model with the humidity option.
Up to three ISF1-Z incubator shakers can be stacked without additional components, and every unit remains fully independent — different temperatures and applications can run simultaneously. The ISF1-Z can also be combined with the predecessor models ISF1-X and ISF1-W within the same stack.
The shaking diameter determines oxygen transfer. Larger diameters (25 or 50 mm) at lower speeds suit large shake flasks, while small diameters (3 mm) at high speeds suit microtiter plates. The ISF1-Z offers 3, 6, 9, 12.5, 19, 25, 50 and 70 mm, plus an optional stepless adjustment, so one shaker covers all of them.
Yes. The ISF1-Z is made entirely of stainless steel and follows a hygienic design in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14159, with rounded corners, an integrated rear drain and a spill-protected drive. IQ/OQ documentation is available and can be performed on-site, and an optional UV lamp allows chamber sterilization between runs.
It depends on the model. The Basic and EcoDew® models operate from room temperature +10 °C up to 80 °C. The Peltier model covers RT −5 °C to 60 °C with heating and cooling. The Compressor model reaches from 3 °C up to 80 °C. All models hold a temperature deviation below ±0.2 °C at 37 °C.
