CO2 control is essential when working with mammalian cell cultures. Kuhner was the first company to manufacture and supply incubator shakers with CO2 control more than 15 years ago and continues to offer this option.
Learn more about Kuhner’s CO₂ control system.

A reliable control of O2 is essential for cultivating cells (proliferation and metabolism of stem cells) and microorganisms with low/no oxygen demand. The O2 controller reduces the O2 level from ambient (20.95% at dry air; normoxia) to approximately 0% O2 (hypoxic). A digital PID controller adjusts the N2 flow rate to maintain the desired O2 value.
Visit our poster gallery and find more information on the poster "Oxygen Transport Phenomena in Single-Use Shaking Flasks under Reduced Oxygen Conditions".pdf

All Kuhner incubator shakers can be fitted with cooling. The refrigeration system is regulated by a fully digital PID control ensuring minimal energy consumption. The cooling is switched on only when required as determined by the chamber temperature and set point.
Learn more about the temperature control.

Humidity control is an important factor in successful fermentation. Evaporation from microtiter plates, or when cultivating in flasks for long periods (e.g. cell cultures), can be significantly reduced with humidification.
To reduce evaporation from shake flasks or microtiter plates a water bath is placed inside the incubator. This water bath is fitted with an automatic water supply.
Our newly developed EcoDew®-Technology provides precise humidity control.

AerationSystem and FlowCon provide the ideal system for carrying out cell/stem cell cultivations in a simple, fast, and inexpensive manner.
Lab shakers in temperature-controlled rooms and incubator shakers without humidity and CO2-control can be equipped with the AerationSystem and FlowCon to easily implement humidification and a controlled gas composition for carrying out cell cultivations (e.g., CHO, HEK cells…) in shake flasks.

The LT-X is completely made of stainless steel. It can either be painted white or have a processed stainless steel look.

As in a biological safety cabinet, the chamber of a Kuhner incubator shaker can also be sterilized with an integrated UV lamp. The lamp is situated to maximise irradiation of the chamber and shaking table. The UV lamp has a clearly marked external switch and when the door is opened, the UV-lighting is automatically switched off.

IQ-OQ (Installation Qualification and Operation Qualification) is an equipment qualification according to GMP procedure. Kuhner offers this service which can also be carried out at the customer’s premises.

The dual table is an easy and economical way of doubling the shaking capacity. The dual shaking table consists of two levels. Each level will accept an E (420 x 420 mm) or EX (500 x 420 mm) size tray.
The dual table is available with a fixed distance between the two levels of either 120, 160, 180, or 200 mm. At the maximal distance of 200 mm the lower level accepts 125 mL, 250 mL, and 500 mL Erlenmeyer shake flasks.
However, with the dual table the shaking speed is limited to 200 rpm at a shaking diameter of 50 mm (all other maximum shaking frequencies, dependent on the shaking diameter, can be withdrawn from the LT-X manual).

The Kuhner EPFL-table offers maximum flexibility for screening and cultivation with different vessel types. Its individual clamps allow holders and universal trays to be quickly exchanged while the remaining vessels continue shaking. Compatible with microtiter plates, 50 mL centrifuge tubes, Erlenmeyer flasks, laboratory bottles and other cultivation vessels, the EPFL-table can be easily adapted to changing applications. Universal trays can also be equipped with sticky strips for flexible positioning of vessels of different sizes and shapes.
EPFL-tables are available for different Kuhner shaker models with 3, 4 or 5 individual clamps.

The ceiling of any Kuhner incubator shaker can be fitted with LED modules for the cultivation of phototrophic organisms. The control module allows full programming of night/day cycles and variable light intensity.

Available for light sensitive medium or organisms. Any Kuhner incubator shaker can be delivered with blackened windows to prevent unwanted daylight or UV radiation inside the incubator.
Check out the Kuhner EquipNote "Light protection for Kuhner incubators".

Kuhner has designed a new light shade plate for the LT-X. This plate is easily placed in front of the door window and held in position with clamps. It prevents radiation affecting the contents of the incubator chamber and protects light sensitive media from UV, artificial and/or daylight.
Simply lift the light shade plate to look at the cultures without opening the incubator door. When light protection is no longer required, the plate is easily removed.
Check out the Kuhner EquipNote "Light protection for Kuhner incubators".

To prevent accidental operation of the controllers, the panel can be protected by a perspex cover.

The TabCom option from Kuhner consists of a cable for power and data with the connection port integrated in the shaking table (see picture below). A cable guide prevents the cable breaking and ensures secure data recording. The flexibility of TabCom means online measurement systems can be easily integrated.

This option includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen with our Kuhner Insight Software. The touchscreen has been designed for simple operation, monitoring and programming. It can also be retrofitted to existing incubator shakers.
Learn more about our Display.

Kuhner TOM (Transfer-Rate Online Measurement) measures online oxygen transfer rate (OTR), carbon dioxide transfer rate (CTR) and the respiratory quotient (RQ) in up to 16 individual shake flasks for better process understanding and informed process development. TOM is easily installed in any Kuhner shaker and can be operated with various flask types and sizes including single use shake flasks. Kuhner TOM has zero footprint on the shaker tray as it is mounted above (see picture below).

Everything you need to know about the LT-X incubator shaker: space, load, maintenance, temperature, monitoring and upgrades.

The Kuhner LT-X (Lab-Therm) is a space-saving, stackable incubator shaker for biotechnology and pharmaceutical laboratories. It offers the same capabilities as the larger ISF1-Z and ISF4-X models in a size that fits any lab, accepts flasks up to 6 litres and can be equipped with humidity, CO₂ and O₂ control.
Kuhner shakers are suitable for the cultivation of microbial, plant, human and animal cell cultures. Typical applications of the LT-X are bacteria, cell culture, stem cells, plant cells and algae, supported by optional CO₂, O₂ and humidity control and LED illumination.
The exceptional chamber height of the LT-X accepts flasks up to 6 litres. An EX-tray (500 x 420 mm) has space for two 6-litre Erlenmeyer flasks. With smaller flasks there is enough head height for one or two stationary trays above the shaking table. Trays with fixed clamps are available for flask sizes from 25 mL to 6,000 mL.
Two LT-X units can be stacked without special kits or tools; stacking three is not possible. An LT-X can also be stacked on an ISF1-X/Z incubator shaker using a special stacking adapter. Floor stands are available at 400 mm (for two LT-X) and 765 mm (for one LT-X).
Yes, linear shaking is available besides orbital shaking. Orbital speeds are 20–500 rpm at a shaking diameter of 12.5 mm, 20–400 rpm at 25 mm and 20–300 rpm at 50 mm. Linear speeds are 20–400 rpm at 12.5 mm, 20–300 rpm at 25 mm and 20–200 rpm at 50 mm. Thanks to the direct drive, the shaking diameter can be changed at any time.
|
The dual table adds a second shaking level and doubles the capacity. The levels are fixed at 120, 160, 180 or 200 mm, and the shaking speed is limited to 200 rpm at a 50 mm shaking diameter. The EPFL-table with 3 clamps lets you combine different holders, for example for 50 mL tubes or microtiter plates, and remove a single holder while the others keep shaking.
The Basic and EcoDew® versions work from ambient +10 °C up to 80 °C; the Compressor version cools down to ambient −15 °C. Versions optimized for cell cultures cover ambient −10 °C (Compressor) to 60 °C. Temperature is set in 0.1 °C steps with an absolute accuracy of ± 0.30 °C at 37 °C (± 0.25 °C for cell culture versions).
Yes. The LT-XC models are optimized for cell culture and include CO₂ control with an infrared (NDIR) sensor for 0–20 % CO₂, with an absolute accuracy of ± 0.40 % at 5 % CO₂. Kuhner was the first company to supply incubator shakers with CO₂ control, more than 15 years ago.
Yes. The optional O₂ control (PhysOx control) lowers the oxygen level from ambient (20.95 % in dry air, normoxia) to approximately 0 % O₂ (hypoxic). A digital PID controller adjusts the N₂ flow to hold the set value, and the zirconium oxide sensor has an absolute accuracy of ± 0.40 % at 5 % O₂. It suits stem cells and microorganisms with low or no oxygen demand.
A door switch stops the motor as soon as the door is opened, and the motor restarts after the door is closed properly. The maintenance-free direct drive is protected from spills, and the all-stainless-steel interior has a drain at the back. The chamber can be cleaned with chemicals or sterilized with the optional UV lamp. All Kuhner shakers come with a 5 year warranty.
Yes, the LT-X can be used in the GMP sector. IQ-OQ documentation (Installation Qualification and Operation Qualification) is available and can also be carried out at your premises. Kuhner develops and produces its shakers according to 21 CFR and GAMP 5, and every machine undergoes a final test before delivery; the test protocol is sent to the customer.
Kuhner shakers have a CAN-bus interface as standard; USB, Ethernet, digital and analogue interfaces are optional. With Kuhner Insight software and the NET-60 interface, measuring data can be integrated into your company network. An optional 7-inch touchscreen with Kuhner Insight software enables operation, monitoring and programming and can be retrofitted to existing incubator shakers.
