Human, animal, and insect cell culture is a demanding and long-running process. Over cultivation periods of four to eight days at 37 °C, evaporation of the culture medium can significantly impact cell culture performance and result quality. To minimize evaporation while maintaining an efficient oxygen transfer rate (OTR) and gas exchange, the Duetz System (from Enzyscreen) is widely used. It provides effective evaporation control without compromising oxygen transfer, helping to ensure consistent and reliable cultivation conditions.
However, up until now, the only available solution for high-throughput screening was manual work: an operator manually clamping and unclamping sandwich covers on each microtiter plate. The Kuhner Nemiri changes this paradigm.

Manual handling
• Operational time: Limited to 8h/24h: operator required at all times
• Sterility & contamination: high contamination risk at every human touchpoint
• Reproducibly: Variable, operator-dependent clamping pressure

Kuhner Nemiri automation
• Operational time: 24/7, unattended operation
• Sterility & contamination: zero-touch sterility maintained
• Reproducibly: identical, calibrated pressure on every cycle
The Kuhner Nemiri is designed for seamless integration into automated laboratory and biotech workflows. It can be effortlessly combined with collaborative robots, automated incubator shakers, liquid handling systems, plate readers, automated storage units, and robotic plate handling platforms. By strengthening process safety and reducing manual intervention, it helps maintain sterile and reproducible conditions while protecting valuable biological samples, development efforts, and existing laboratory automation investments.

The Kuhner Nemiri offers maximum flexibility for automated microtiter plate workflows and is fully compatible with the complete portfolio of Enzyscreen’s sandwich covers (Duetz System). From proven stainless steel covers to ultra-lightweight carbon versions and convenient single-use solutions, the Kuhner Nemiri supports the right cover concept for every cultivation process.
Single-use sandwich covers provide a strong advantage for high-throughput screening (HTS) environments, especially where autoclaving large numbers of reusable covers is not practical or would create a bottleneck. By reducing cleaning and sterilization requirements, they enable a more efficient, scalable, and GMP-friendly workflow while supporting process consistency and operational reliability.

The Kuhner Nemiri brings a new level of continuity to automated cultivation workflows. It supports reliable operation around the clock, 365 days per year, reducing dependency on manual handling and enabling biotechnology laboratories to extend productivity beyond regular working hours, without increasing operational complexity or scaling the headcount.

In sensitive cell culture workflows, every manual handling step can introduce variability and increases the contamination risk. The Kuhner Nemiri automates the handling of sandwich covers (from
Enzyscreen), helping to preserve sterility and maintain consistent biological process conditions. This supports safe, reproducible workflows, regardless of operator availability, working hours, or shift changes.

The Kuhner Nemiri features an integrated magazine that stores up to four clamps directly inside the unit, keeping them readily available whenever required during automated operation. This significantly reduces manual intervention, simplifies process logistics, and supports reliable workflow continuity.
In addition, the system can detect clamps without plates, allowing the magazine to be loaded and unloaded automatically in combination with plate hotels, robotic plate handlers, or other automation modules. At the start and end of the overall process, clamp handling can be fully automated ; for example, in tandem with the Kuhner MPS-Z Automated incubator and its capacity of up to 16 microtiter plates. This enables efficient magazine management and supports stable, unattended operation as part of a fully automated laboratory ecosystem.

The Kuhner Nemiri is a stand-alone automated clamping system that enables fully automated use of Enzyscreen’s sandwich covers and clamps (Duetz System) for microtiter plates. It clamps and unclamps sandwich covers for deepwell MTPs with precise, calibrated pressure to ensure hermetic isolation of each individual well, with absolute zero manual intervention.
Its stand-alone architecture integrates into any existing workflow and is highly compatible with labware handling robots, while stable plate positioning keeps cell cultures secure even at high agitation speeds. It is also designed to work seamlessly with the Kuhner MPS-Z Automated incubator.
1. Preparation: Deepwell plates are prepared with samples in the liquid handler.
2. Covering: Enzyscreen sandwich covers are applied to the plates.
3. Transfer: Plates are transferred one by one to the Kuhner Nemiri.
4. Automated Clamping Process: Automatic retrieval of the clamp from the internal magazine (or supply with clamps from the plate hotel). Calibrated pressure is applied to the Duetz lid, ensuring hermetic isolation of each individual well.
5. Incubation: All incoming plates from the liquid handler are automatically processed and further transferred to the incubator shaker until the incubator’s capacity is reached.
6. Unclamping: Automatic unclamping at the end of the culture cycle. The clamp is returned to the magazine.
7. Unloading: At the end of the overall process, remaining clamps can be unloaded from the Kuhner Nemiri magazine in a controlled sequence. The excess clamps are transferred back to the plate hotel and stored there in an organized manner, preparing the automation setup for the next workflow.
The Kuhner Nemiri was purposefully designed to fit seamlessly into the Kuhner automation range. Together, these advanced instruments cover the full spectrum of automated cell culture: from microplates to tubes to shake flasks.
